Special K cereal has come up with the Special K diet in order to grab a share of the diet crowd. But is the Special K diet a real diet?
How Does the Special K Diet Work?
The Special K diet is supposed to help dieters lose up to 6 pounds in as little as two weeks. This is a bold claim, and the company stands behind it. But how accurate is it really? What is so special about the Special K diet? If you research the diet closely, you’ll find that there really isn’t anything special about it. It’s just common weight loss.
Here is how the Special K diet works: You eat two servings of your choice of Special K cereal per day. There are a variety of Special K cereals from which to choose, but you can only eat two servings a day. This means you must make sure to measure out an exact serving two times a day, instead of guessing at how much a serving looks like.
The only type of milk you can use is skim milk, and you must measure out 2/3 of a cup. You are also encouraged to add fruit to this meal. Remember, you must do this twice a day, no more or no less.
Your third meal can be anything you want. The Special K diet puts no restrictions on what you can or cannot eat. As long as you have your two servings of cereal per day, your third meal is whatever you want. In between meals you’re supposed to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. If no fresh fruits or vegetables are available, the Special K diet says you can eat a Special K bar. As for drinks, you can drink whatever you want.
Is the Special K Diet Special?
There’s nothing really special about the Special K diet. People have reported losing weight with the diet, but that’s to be expected. Any diet that causes you to eat less food and take in fewer calories will help you lose weight.
Replacing two daily meals with two servings of cereal means you’ve reduced your caloric intake. There’s a big difference between having a bowl of cereal with fruit and having a cheeseburger with onion rings. The Special K diet is based on a study that showed eating certain cereals twice a day lead to weight loss. The participants did lose weight, but that’s mostly because they simply ate less.
The Special K diet isn’t all bad. And Special K cereal is probably healthier than what some people eat for lunch every day. A bowl of Special K with fruit is much better than a slice of pizza. But sometimes one serving of cereal just isn’t enough to make you feel full. You may find yourself starving less than an hour after eating the cereal.
The Special K diet can work if you have terrible eating habits. Replacing two meals, heavy in calories and fat, with a healthy cereal isn’t all that bad. But people who try the Special K diet say it’s hard to sustain for any period of time. Eating two bowls of cereal day after day gets boring.
Even without the Special K diet, Special K is one of the healthiest cereals available. So while it may not be that great for long term weight loss, it is a better cereal than those high in fat, sugar, and calories.
