What is the 3–Hour Diet?

Some diets sound too good to be true. The 3–Hour Diet falls into this category. What else can be said about a diet that encourages eating candy? If you're interested in a diet that let's you eat all the chocolate you want, then this one is for you.

The 3–Hour Diet isn't what you think. It doesn't involve being on a diet for only three hours. Instead, the diet involves doing things in threes. You must eat breakfast no later than one hour of getting up. You must then eat every three hours up until three hours before bedtime. You stop eating at least three hours before bedtime, and have nothing else until breakfast the next morning. This diet is supposed to increase your metabolism, increase your energy, and decrease your appetite.

What do you eat every three hours?

Unlike most diets, the 3–Hour Diet doesn't really tell you what you can or can't eat. It's more focused on portion control as opposed to counting calories. You're supposed to visualize what your plate (recommended 9 inches) should look like covered with food. For example, you can visualize a deck of traditional playing cards to see the size of your meat servings. You can eat chicken, cheese, eggs, fish, or any type of meat you want. However, the serving can't be larger than a stack of playing cards.

Other recommendations include visualizing a Rubik's cube to represent the amount of carbohydrates you can have. A cap from a water bottle can be used to represent the amount of fat you can eat. And a stack of three DVD cases represents the correct servings of fruits and vegetables. The theory behind the 3–Hour Diet is that all food is good in moderation. So instead of telling you to avoid certain foods, you're encouraged to eat what you want in moderation. If you balance your meals correctly, each meal should be no more than 400 calories.

The major complaint about the 3–Hour Diet is that it's too complicated. Timing is everything with this diet. You must eat every three hours or the diet won't work. If you have breakfast at 8 am, then you must have a snack by 11 am. It doesn't matter if you're too busy to eat, stuck in a meeting, or have gone back to sleep. You must eat every three hours like clockwork. This diet also requires you to basically follow the same routine every single day.

Supporters of the diet say that eating every three hours helps speed your metabolism. Following the diet correctly can cause you to lose at least 2 pounds per week. The problem is that some healthcare professionals say the diet doesn't speed metabolism.

Some experts say the only way to really speed your metabolism is to get daily exercise. They say it doesn't matter if you eat every three hours or every six hours, you must exercise to increase your metabolism. Some people who've used the 3–Hour Diet reported gaining weight after having to eat every three hours. Additionally, there's no proof that meal timing actually helps weight loss.
